Cell phones banned in Classrooms
The South Carolina Department of Education will be implementing a statewide policy banning cell phones and other personal electronic devices in classrooms. This piece of legislation comes out of the State’s FY 2024-25 Budget that says in order for school districts to receive state funds, they must implement this new policy.
While cell phones have undeniably become an integral part of our lives, the evidence overwhelmingly suggests that banning cell phones leads to improved academic performance, enhanced social skills and a safer, more focused learning environment.
There are many reasons to support the restriction of cell phone use during school hours including:
Decrease distraction and increase focus on learning
Promote critical thinking and academic integrity in coursework
Encourage personal communication and social skills
Reduce bullying and social media threats
Improved classroom performance and student engagement
Here are the details:
1- This policy will take effect in January 2025 when students return to school for 2nd semester.
2- Our district policy will include the return of any devices brought to school to the appropriate owner.
Now is the time to start this conversation around your household. Thank you to the parents, teachers and community for all you do to support our classrooms.
